Ms Abilene B,
Everyone's body reacts differently to a through hike so be ready for yours
to surprise you. My metabolism slows down and I get my period more often
when I hike. Weird but true. Whatever product you use while menstruating,
be sure to make sure you're really comfortable with it before you hike. As
in don't start using a soft cup or diva cup for the first time on the trail
in southern CA. I used tampons but have friends who found using a diva cup
based system more convenient.
And definitely pack out whatever it is you are using. No period management
products biodegrade rapidly enough that you can bury them in the woods
responsibly, even if you are using the "natural" ones. You can't bury the
tampons- must pack out, but should cathole any blood that is released when
you change a tampon or diva cup.
It is inconvenient to have your period while hiking but between tampons,
wet wipes and hand sanitizer you can still feel clean and can stay on the
trail.
