> Interesting. My recollection is of seeing a variety of messages in sand,
often addressed in general to those thru's coming after (as at that point it
seemed like there were pretty much only "our tribe" (thru's) on the trail).

Indeed, it's pretty far from an awful thing to do, not a great example for
me to have included. I suppose the guide would consist of a list of "high
crimes", and some courtesy issues people may not have thought of. :)

entirely unaffected by any such list or associated exhortations that this
group might come up with.

I'm inclined to think that most of the time, most of us just aren't thinking
when we do something lame, particularly in new, unfamiliar situations, but
we tend to be more considerate once things are brought to our attention.
Lots of people head out to attempt a thru-hike with little or no previous
trail experience. It could be a little guide to help new hikers avoid
common mistakes or
not-so-common-but-super-lame-for-others-when-they-do-happen mistakes.

Another example would be partying until 2:00AM at the camp-ground in
Idyllwild when you're surrounded by other hikers who may be getting up at
6:00 to head back up to the trail. You're right, some guys will do it
regardless, but sometimes I think people can just be oblivious, and a widely
distributed trail etiquette guide might help.
