[pct-l] Mt. Shasta and the Proto-PCT

As I understand it, that idea was abandoned due to concerns over the lack of
available water sources enroute. That's why the current route goes so far
east through the Trinity Alps and Mable Mtns before swinging back east
towards Crater Lake and resuming its northerly march.

Had water been available, the PCT would be a few hundred  miles shorter.
