IMHO, Paydays are the ideal trail snack. Compact, cheap (especially at the 99 Cent store) and they taste good, not like cardboard, which is a key consideration at altitude.

For the regular sized bar:
240 calories
120 fat calories
2 grams dietary fiber
7 grams protein
Less than a buck.

We buy bags of the fun sized bars. Easy to just pop one in your mouth at any time, easily fit in a pocket for fast retrieval. They go on sale after Halloween and that's a good time to stock up.

Here's a comparison of 10 food bars that you may be considering for your
big-assed hike this Spring. I hope this might help anyone looking to pack
light but calorie heavy:

Mainstay Emergency Bar 8 oz. 1200 cal $4.50/bar = 150 cal/oz.
$0.56/oz 267 cal/$
Kind Plus 1.4 oz 190 cal $1.20/bar = 137
cal/oz $0.85/oz 158 cal/$
Millennium Energy Bar 2.95 oz. 400 cal $1.45 per bar = 136 cal/oz
$0.49/oz 276 cal/$
Organic Food Bar One 1.58oz 210 cal $1.05/bar = 133 cal/oz
$0.66/oz 200 cal/$
ProBar Superfood Slam 3.0 oz 380 cal $2.50/bar = 126 cal/oz.
$0.83/oz 152 cal/$
Raw Revolution 1.8 oz 220 cal $1.46/bar = 122
cal/oz $0.81/oz 150 cal/$
Met RX Big 100 3.52 oz 410 cal $1.74/bar = 117
cal/oz. $0.49/oz 236 cal/$
Odwalla 2.0 oz, 210 cal $1.20/bar = 105
cal/oz. $0.60/oz. 175 cal/$
Clif Bar 2.4 oz, 240 cal $1.00/bar = 100
cal/oz. $0.42/oz 240 cal/$
Bear Valley Meal Pack 3.75 oz 210 cal $1.50/bar = 56 cal/oz.
 $0.40/oz 140 cal/$

Note: the "new" Millennium Bars contain 3.5 grams of trans fat and
probably a few other things that aren't all that great for you, but you
get what you pay for, right? I wish I had time to compile the nutritional
info for these, but much of it can be found on the internets.

see y'all at the kick off!

p.s. - Apologies for omitting your favorite geometrically-shaped nutrient
block from my list. Please feel free to contribute any addendum.
