The best thing about Ray Jardine's itineraries in my opinion are how  
some of them start quite late in May, demonstrating that So Cal in  
May is not hell. Too many people are too afraid of So Cal and think  
starting early will be better. A later start means possibly less  
Sierra Snow if you get there later which means potentially faster/ 
eaasier/mentally less stressful travel through the Sierras.
