When I thru-hiked the AT in 2009 my girlfriend stayed home. I'm thru-hiking
the PCT this year and she is staying home again. This time I'll make sure
she gets letters and/or messages from me every few days or as often as
possible.

Staying in constant contact helps quite a bit. I highly suggest bringing a
smart phone and sending messages/pictures from the trip. This will reassure
him you are safe and haven't forgot about him.

The new facebook messenger android/iphone apps are in my opinion one of the
best ways to stay in touch now that they enabled sending of short voice
messages. Try and make sure he is staying busy at home too. If he's into
video games get him a 100+hour game like Skyrim!
