 Bears tend to avoid people where hunting is legal, so there is no pressing need for them outside of the national parks.

The bear canister is certainly a no-brainer, no-hassle way to protect your food. And you get a place to sit. The Bearikade canisters are light enough to give serious consideration to carrying one the whole way.
