[pct-l] DEET

Good afternoon,

About this time every year there surfaces various schemes to best the
mosquitoes by using something other than DEET, i.e. a more “natural”
concoction or process, or by just “toughing it out”. Each to his own, but
I will say to them: Carry an ounce or so of DEET anyway; at least until
you’ve encountered and endured significant mosquito infestations and have
proven that the non-DEET practice is as sound as the theory.

Being an ultra-lite hiker I try to avoid any redundancy or overage, but I
do often carry extra DEET -- and in two separate bottles. In a hurry to
get the DEET on and continue up the trail it’s amazing how easy it is to
leave the bottle sitting on the rock or log only to discover the error
three or four hours later when you need another coating of repellent.
Mosquitoes can be monumentally distracting.
