I headed south from Ashland around the 10th of Oct Ran into snow storms at Etna. If you have the gear to snow camp and hike you will be fine. I didn't and wasn't so ended up going home. Marmot

I think I'm a few weeks behind the 'herd' and was contemplating skipping ahead to just before the 7500 foot pass near Mount Shasta to avoid the July/August N. California heat and to give me some more wiggle room to finish Washington before the snows fall.

For those who know the area or who've done the trail, is this plan reasonable or is there some high pass I'm not aware of in N. California that might get snowed in or some weird condition in the area in the Fall that would make this plan difficult? Is water even harder to obtain in the Fall versus the summer in N. California as the summer has dried out the land?
