Diane,
As usual, you are right on target. I have hiked the Sierras most of my life
and have thru-hiked the PCT twice. Bear spray would be as useful as
carrying a rock.

Regarding bear spray:

Do whatever you want, but I can guarantee if you are a section hiker,
you'll probably carry the bear spray your entire section and you may
or may not decide at the end of the trip that it was worth it. Most
likely if you decide to cut some weight on a future section you'll
decide it wasn't worth it and save it for actual grizzly country.

If you are a thru-hiker, you will mail the bear spray home no later
than Idyllwild. If you only start carrying it from Kennedy Meadows,
you will probably try to send it home from Kennedy Meadows before you
even bother to carry it. Fortunately, they will mail outgoing packages.

Enjoy your planning!
