[pct-l] hiking through the sierras - do PCT folks switch to hiking boots from running shoes?

Hey, Mango and everyone else,

Regarding your unfortunate fall in Miller Creek in 2011, I want to let
everyone know that this creek nearly did the same to us that year!

Although the Tahoe creeks are shorter upstream and therefore less huge at
the trail crossing points, don't let this one fool you into expecting it to
be "mellow." In 2010 and 2011 it was full, deep, and moving fast!

Based on our experiences with this one over the years, we have gone out of
our way to cross Miller upstream at the Richardson Lake road's concrete
"bridge." We crossed Miller at this location a few days ago just to save us
the dunking!

The snow is melting out fast, now, and the flowers and bugs are showing up
bug-time! Miller wasn't as high as the previous years, but better to go out
of our way and cross it safely than to be sorry!

I did, in 2010, which was a higher than normal snow year, plus we left KM
around the 1st of June. The microspikes seemed to do better on my boots, and
the boots were more rugged and gave more of a feeling of protection,
especially on stream crossings. In 2011 (a REALLY high snow year) I wore
trail runners nobo from Sonora Pass, and they worked out well, except for
that one time when I lost one while being taken downstream against my will
by Miller Creek. I found that you can put microspikes on a Croc, but its not
recommended.

If I were starting over, I would go with trail runners the whole way. TR's
don't freeze solid at night and require beating and banging to loosen up
enough to get on. They're lighter, dry more quickly, and are adequate for
stream crossings, if laced tightly enough. All our 2010 group but me wore
TR's in the Sierra, and they did fine.
Good luck,
Mango

For PCT through hikers hiking through the sierras - do folks tend to switch
