You're right about floating the canisters. I've never done that because I
always have a scale handy at home. (That could be useful on the road, but
you would need an empty and a full of the same brand to compare - not
something I'm likely to have on the road.)

As for the wind screen - absolutely true. I've done a lot of testing with
these. A foil windscreen ups the efficiency SIGNIFICANTLY. It generally
gets me from 4-5 L per canister to around 7 with a pocket rocket type stove.
The Jet boil shows almost no benefit from a wind screen. (i.e. the wind has
little effect on the JetBoil.) This has been borne out by Roger Caffin of
Backpacking Lite in his articles about canister stoves.

For those that haven't done it - One thing that is VERY IMPORTANT in using a
foil wind screen with a canister stove - it reflects heat back at the
canister which can make it hot and DANGEROUS, I always check the temp of
the canister every 30-60 seconds when I am using a windscreen. If it is
getting hot to the touch, I open up the windscreen a tad. Explosions have
happened and as you can imagine - they are not pretty. That's why the
manufacturers tell you NOT to use a windscreen. (There are more
sophisticated windscreens that fit around the burner but ABOVE the canister.
These should not cause this overheating - but I have never tried them.)

Anyway, I have been kind of OCD about the canister fuel use for years and I
find a pocket rocket gives me about 4-5 liters per canister, with a wind
screen (and extra attention to safety) I can get this up to about 7L, and a
JetBoil gives me around 11L.

All in all, I have settled in on the JetBoil except for very short trips
where I take a cat can & alcohol.

I saw an article a while back about floating canisters in water; how deep it
sinks indicates how much gas is still in it. You can use a felt tip to draw
a line on the outside. Float a full one and note where the water comes.
Float an empty one and do the same. I do that when I return with a partial
and it gives me a good idea how much is left.

I have also found the biggest waste of canister fuel is not having a good
wind deflector. You can improve the pocket rocket and similar stoves fuel
consumption significantly by using an alum foil wind deflector.
