[pct-l] ] Thru numbers

Dear Papa Joe:

Ethel and I are in absolute awe of what you good people do at Casa de Luna. That said, a sign is good idea. I have casually noted in our journal that it is difficult to stock the cooler with fruit daily, and hope hikers will take a hint, but thus far have been reticent to explicitly ask that only one or two pieces of fruit, bottles of water, or occasional single serving merlots should be taken.

But, we are pretty much at the limit of what our budget allows. I also think if numbers increase local trail angels may need to combine their efforts, if only for budget reasons. Already Ethel and I help Shepherd and she in turn helps us (I am on a hiking trip now and she is stocking the box for the last two weeks of June.) But if numbers increase, we may need to formally organize a group or schedule. This list might be the best place to start.

Cheers to Team Turtle!

Our "Oasis" cache was hit VERY hard this season as well.

Increasing numbers have made it necessary to re-stock more often, but the problem isn't just the numbers.

When I arrived to re-stock one day, there were maybe 15 hikers enjoying a nice break in the shade sitting in the chairs we provide.

Under several of the chairs and next to many on the ground, I saw 3, 4,or more empties that they had already finished. And some got more after we filled the cooler!

I DON'T like signs that tell you what to do or how to do it, BUT........
next year there will be a sign saying something like,"Have ONE OR TWO and move on". Be considerate of those behind you and those who have to buy and re-stock on a daily basis.

Last season a pair of hikers wrote (bragged) in our register about drinking 18 beverages between the 2 of them!

VERY inappropriate trail etiquette. Behavior like this will be the demise of the "ice chest" caches if it continues.

The sign in sheets we leave at our cooler with fruit and water (near
Silverwood) are also not an accurate measure, but how often we have to restock
the cooler is. Ethel and I have been refilling the cooler almost daily for
nearly 3 weeks now, and we can't recall any year when we have seen so many
hikers come through.

As for the comment about commercial enterprise replacing traditional trail
angels, we will do this as long as we can, but if numbers were to say
double again, we would simply not be able to keep the cooler stocked on our
budget. On the other hand, whereas there used to be just one cache, there are
now 3, so just as thru hikers have increased, so have the number of
angels. It may just all balance out in the end.
