General rule of thumb....

Bears can be aggressive towards humans in areas where they are
protected, especially in National Parks.

Bears are timid towards humans in areas where they can be hunted,
which includes Oregon:

By all means carry the can if it makes you feel better. They also make
good, if heavy, stools and tables. But you most likely won't need it
for bears.
