[pct-l] Oprah and low snow provide a record year?

I read it and thought it was a very good book.  It's not so much about the PCT as it is about her finding herself and using the PCT to take the time to be alone and accomplish the challenge.  She was definitely not a prostitute!  I thought it was a very inspiring book.

Hmm I don't watch Oprah, heard about the book on NPR. I heard about the PCT about 5 years before the book came out.

As for in general ironically the majority of Oprah's books are "old"- around for years, or won Pulitzer prize and have Oprah sticker on them. I'm not sure if this is her way of educating the masses or if she gets some kind of profit?
I read a lot, probably 2-3 books a week if not more and it's not like Wild is some masterpiece but it's not a bad book.

Idk where prostitute came from?

I dont think she's a prostitute, as I have no idea other than other folks' reviews relayed to me. I didnt read it myself, just heard about it. I can say I have never read popular garbage endorsed by oprah or the new york times etc. We have too much of a homogenized country, so theres no need to read what the sheeple masses read.

Agree with Tortoise's sentiment,

Clearly Cheryl had a lot of personal issues that she was dealing with when she hiked the PCT, but there is no need to be so vulgar as to call her a prostitute.

We have enough through hikers who are annoyingly self promoters and peddling something. The spirit of the trail is lost when we follow. Will this novelty, like Bill Brysons book for the AT, coupled with a likely low snow year make 2013 a record year for thru-hikers attempted? I see the kickoff registration closed in 1 day as well. Any other indicators, like more than normal jounals?
