It's a good reminder that things happen to experinced and inexperienced alike, but when 5 people need medial attention on day one, there is something wrong.  I don't know that it is, but that's a symptom of something happening that needs to be fixed/addressed.

I will agree some of the remarks were a bit ummmm not nice.

Shouldn't lump every new person in same group.

Of course one should be prepared but we just shared a story of experienced people killed in avalanche... And a hiker lost (that did PCT, and was found)

Things happen to the experienced and inexperienced

> I am technically a newbie to the trail although no stranger to California backpacking and I'm only doing 500 miles of the pct up in NorCal in June. You guys are freaking me out a little bit with all the smack talk on new pct hikers. I haven't done a distance
> like the one I will be attempting but I feel that my prep work will be more than sufficient and we all have to start somewhere. Please don't be mean to us noobs. We need you all to help us learn the best ways to enjoy this trail. Isn't that what this list serve > is partially for? Can't we all just get along?

Nothing mean has been said by anybody on this thread......they're just stating facts!

If one isn't prepared, they'll find out very soon; better sooner than later. In fact, those that set out on a hike
unprepared could potentially put others' lives at risk by needing to be rescued or by starting fires.

It is selfish to not understand the real risks and go unprepared on a hike of this magnitude.
