IIRC, the TSA proposed lifting the restrictions on many items, ski/trekking
poles included, but then decided not to go ahead with it after the flight
attendants' union protested.
Like Marmot, I've always just collapsed my LT4's, stuck them in a mailing
tube (because they're carbon fiber), and strapped them to my pack. The pack
went into a simple cloth bag and the whole thing was checked. I've never had
a problem. Metal poles can take a right angled blow without breaking and
don't need the mailing tube.
