Hi Derek,
I think you will find with Amtrac that you need to ride a section on the rails before they offer you a bus ride to your destination via bus ride. Just part of the deal with Amtrac, like it or ....,,

Getting to and from Santa Cruz with this in mind may prove to be problematic for you, unless you research a bit more or,  you figure out another way of travel.  

A thumbed ride comes to mind.
