Not gross at all Dan. Very sound advice. Also, get in the habit of NOT
shaking hands. You'll find a "knuckle bump" will do just as well with out
exposing your hands to unwanted contamination.

Kinda funny you mention this. This is a little relevant to something I have
observed and been thinking about lately, and how it might relate to trail
life.

Our "family" has hired a group of young men to help us move out of a home.
They have terrible hygiene habits, so we have had to mark certain snacks,
etc., "YOURS" and "OURS". Sharing their germs is *not* part of the deal.

So why even mention this? For folks that haven't dealt with and/or thought
about this as a potential problem: Is it safe to share what I have, or to
share what others have, on the trail or ????

Yes, as long as you keep the actual contact with what you are sharing,
*especially* food, very separate from the rest of what is being shared.

In simpler terms, DO NOT let others dig inside that bag of candy/trail
mix/potato chips/etc you might have, but instead, shake some out into their
(just used hand sanitizer hopefully) hands. Or into your own (clean?)
hands, then into theirs, maybe with no actual physical contact.

I can't think of how terrible it would be for a very preventable illness to
spoil a hike. Share if you want to, but the procedure of how you go about
sharing might be important, the pint I am trying to make. Just think about
it, and realize that person you want to share with may have very recently
dealt with their own excrement and not cleaned their hands.

Not trying to be unnecessarily gross, I swear,
