I was in Warner Springs yesterday waiting for a ride past a section I hiked in March enjoying the Community Center and a short rest. I headed into the bathrooms to find a couple guys washing their hair in the sink. There was soapy brown water splashed all over the sinks and floors, wet long hair everywhere, and an overall mess.

It made me upset... for a couple reasons. The people who run the Community Center are awesome and don't deserve to deal with cleaning up their mess. They offer $8 showers there, and if you can't afford it there's a nice creek a mile away, or a water spigot outside in the grass. But mainly it bothered me because the way they were abusing that community space could directly affect those behind them. Warner Springs may chose to close the bathrooms tomorrow... do you see what I'm saying?

So at the sink as I was washing my hands and decided to speak up. I asked them if washing their hair in the sink was allowed here. They said there wasn't a sign saying they couldn't. I said they offered $8 showers that wouldn't make a mess and give hikers a bad rap. They laughed at me and I left.

After getting a burger at the main building I headed back to use the restroom when half way through the parking lot one of the long haired sink boys came up behind me and said, "I don't appreciate you telling them we were washing our hair in the sink." I told him that I didn't rat them out but likewise I didn't appreciate them making a mess of a community space. By now we were back by the bathrooms where his long haired friends were sitting on the ground smoking a bowl. They gave me a lot of "HYOH man! Mind your own fucking business." I tried to explain that it's all of our business when it affects us all. There was a lot of interrupting and raised voices and before you knew it they were all standing up surrounding me and getting in my face like they were going to fight me.

One of them, a late 20's w/ long brown hair and glasses and goes by Turtle said he carries Mace for people like me... Really? The other bad one, the instigator, again in his mid/late 20's with a long braid, light blue eyes, dark blue truckers hat, red pack, and accent, told me they didn't need Mace (implying they were going to beat me up). I asked if they were threatening me and I asked what their names were. Only the Turtle guy gave it up. As this went on and they kept posturing like they were going to kick my ass a lady walked out of the women's room and broke it up.

You guys, this was the low of my hike so far. I thought I was doing the right thing by speaking up, directly to the problem. I was trying to watch out for the Community Center and upcoming hikers. Being met w/ physical and verbal aggressiveness sucked. I talked to my buddy Scott on the phone who thru hiked in 2012 and asked if I was out of line. He said No. He said holding people accountable for their actions on the trail is tough, but they need to hear it.

I am so thankful I got my ride to Idyllwild and don't have to worry about hiking with those guys. Keep a look-out tho, they are armed and dangerous for "people like me."

Thanks for listening,

Mayor Trevor

That's a sad and at the same time inspiring story.

Sad that the world is full of aggressive, angry idiots -- not just on the
trail, but anywhere. Of course, the more popular and crowded the trail
becomes, the more the personalities will reflect the larger society.
Hopefully, there is some small karmic action that moves in the other
direction as well ... that the ideas and ideals of tolerance and presence
and compassion embodied in the works of folks like John Muir and Henry
Thoreau, are instilled and nurtured and strengthened by being in the
wilderness, and that some of that returns with us from the trail back into
the world. One can only hope, I guess.

Inspiring, because of your courageous and honorable behavior. Doing the
right thing -- especially when doing so puts one at physical or psychic
risk -- is often not an easy choice. Much easier to just turn one's back
and walk away. But if we all just turn away, when there are real
consequences, then we are failing in our responsibility -- not only to one
another, but equally, to ourselves.

So, I say ...

Three Cheers for Trevor!

That sucks. Plain and simple. Thank you for speaking up! The community
center in Warner Springs was an oasis and I'm also worried that, because of
disrespectful behavior like this, they will decide it's not worth it after
a few years and become another footnote in Yogi's guide and Halfmile's maps
- places that "used to" host hikers.

I was lucky enough not to encounter anything this rotten last summer, and
certainly was never threatened with bodily harm, but I remember how
frustrating and depressing it was to come across PCT graffiti in Chester -
written on a stall in the bathroom in the wonderful grocery store there:
"PCT Love, thx Chester for your hospitality" signed P.L.V.R.
Unfortunately, this hiker felt such enormous gratitude that she decided to
write in permanent marker so I couldn't wash it off. This is the kind of
thing that I hike to get away from.

Again, thanks for your courage. I'm sorry that it resulted in such a macho
and aggressive response. I hope your hike from here on only goes up (in
spirits, not elevation!)

FULL DISCLOSURE: I am anti-prohibition, and 197.3% pro-truth.

But, dude, the marijuana advocates told me that pot smokers were mellow and
non-violent! These couldn't have been marijuana smokers, no siree, they
would have been chill and offered to share with you, because, well, isn't
that what we have been told? Dude, that's harsh!

I've had trouble with every kind of person in society except a buddhist
monk. I'm still waiting for that to happen. Never can tell. Still gotta
live in the real world, ya know.

As a future PCT hiker, I say, THANK YOU, Trevor, for watching out for all of us. You did exactly as you should have done. I hope word gets around and those guys realize that their behavior is unacceptable. Freedom does not mean license.

Unfortunately, In my experience, about 10% of any group of people from
the general population are a**holes.

I also think the trail weeds out the a**holes, but Warner Springs is
too early for the weeding to have happened yet.

Many are gone by Agua Dule, and bet almost none make it to Stehekin. :-)

Which is, I think, why I find I connect more with the trail veterans
at the Kick Off, than I do with the current class.

Anyway, I commend Trevor for making a stand. It sound like these guys
are little more than thugs. I hope they don't ruin the trail magic for
the folks behind them

Don't ruin the summit of San Jacinto with this crap! Turn off your phone

Just to clarify the question of the whitewater closure (and maybe it's been
posted but I just didn't get it), here's a quote from the Wildlands
Conservancy website:
*UPDATE 4/14/14: Whitewater Preserve is now open daily for visitation and
hiking access from 8 am to 5 pm. A closure is scheduled for Thursday, April
17th to complete final maintenance projects. After the 17th the preserve
will remain open.Thank you for your patience while work to steward the
preserve.*

Trevor

Just by posturing they had committed ?assault.? They were fortunate you
(Trevor) didn?t press charges.

Sometimes people need to be dealt with this way in order to grow up. Not
standing up to people who abuse the kindness of others on reinforces their
arrogance and allows the problem to continue.

Mayor Trevor hey man. You absolutely did the right thing and we are proud of you for standing up.

This is Rhino, we had just met near the top of San Jacinto just earlier today lol. I had the ula pack as well. I just completed my cactus to clouds to cactus hike. That was brutal!

Just wanted to give a shout out man.

Don't let that bother you anymore. It's going to be an awesome adventure. Maybe I'll see ya in a few months!

Take care,
Rhino

If you can unlock your phone you can use airvoicewireless.com or another
carrier. They have a bunch of plans. You order a sim card, cut it to
size, and insert it. Pretty much all you do. It's as little as $10 month.

If your phone can't be unlocked, someone else may be able to help.

? Hello Adrian,

If you go T Mo, you might consider getting two SIM cards / numbers: one for
talk and one for data. If you go with their $3 (or $2) a day data/talk/web
plan, it might work for your data/web needs. Use the other SIM for talk.
Check out their non contract plans. If you only used your data plan SIM for
X days / month, it might be cost effective for you. That data plan is
?unlimited? talk as well ~~ one SIM might work for you. T Mo can be very
inexpensive even with two SIMs; it all depends on your communication
requirements/demands. And low costs might lead you to buy one of their
unlocked phones.

One downside of the above strategy is removing SIM #1 and inserting SIM #2
when you need to go from the talk SIM to the $3/day data plan SIM. A
solution to this is secure an unlocked dual SIM GSM phone that will work on
T Mo ? check out Amazon, including the "reviews". Over the years I
purchased all my unlocked / GSM phones in SE Asia where dual SIM GSM phones
are common and they all work on T Mo and they come without the junk apps,
software T Mo add-ons, etc. A hot item in Malaysia right now is a dual SIM
Moto G. Adrian, since you're coming from abroad, you might be able to pick
up an unlocked GSM phone in your neighborhood that will work on either ATT
or T Mo: cross-check the phone specs with ATT and/or T Mo bandwidth
requirments.

T Mo coverage, IMHO, is much better on the PCT compared to 5 years ago,
especially after the ATT / T Mo ?breakup? which netted T Mo a hunk of
bandwidth, a couple of billion, and more ATT access for T Mo users.
Sometimes on the trail when I fire up my dump phone (with T Mo service) the
ATT logo comes up.

On time at Lake Odell (Shelter Cove) a bunch of us were in the store and
someone ask about Verizon service. The cashier replied ?try the end of the
dock?. Someone then ask about ATT service and got a ?no service? reply. I
couldn't resist: ?what about T Mobile?? The cashier rolled her eyes and
just smiled. Everyone else roared with laughter: I was laughing the
hardest. But outside I took a seat at the picnic table adjacent to the
store with my hot dogs and beer and fired up my phone: 3 bars!

Adrian, welcome to the US; have a wonderful hike!

be hope

You mentioned a SIM card so I assume you have a GSM phone, and you are
coming from Europe

There are two types of networks in the USA: GSM and CDMA. You will not
be able to use a CDMA network with your GSM phone.

It is my understanding that AT&T's has the GSM network with the best
coverage on the PCT. I'm sure if this is not true anymore, someone
will correct me

ATT's sells "no contract" access to it's network via it's wholly owned
subsidiary AIO Wireless brand (The ATT brand requires a contract) but
it uses the same ATT GSM network

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aio_Wireless

You can buy a SIM card from them here
https://www.aiowireless.com/shop/byod.html

You can find "no contract" plans here
https://www.aiowireless.com/shop/plans.html

Good Luck

An argument could be made that Verizon has better coverage than AT&T, at
least up here in Washington. But, Verizon is not GSM, which is probably the
type of phone you have.

For a GSM phone I would suggest using Straight Talk. They're a prepaid MVNO
that resells at&t so the service is essentially the same. The difference is
that you prepay and have no contract, it also ends up being about $20 a
month cheaper than at&t.

Check them out at www.straighttalk.com. I have no interest, just a
satisfied customer for more than a year.

Straighttalk looks like a good option.

The use the ATT and the T-Mobile network and are much cheaper

Hi all,

I'm preparing a resupply box that will be heading to Kennedy Meadows and have been advised to send it 2-3 weeks before I'd like it to arrive. Is that a reasonable amount of time for a regional flat rate box? I just don't want to send it too early and have it go over the 2-week holding period (assuming that applies at KM).

Thanks!

Regional Flat Rate is a Priority Mail service. It should take 2-3 days.

Two week holding period? I can't think of any place that has a two week
holding period. You can send your KM box today and it will be there when
you arrive. They won't send it back.

If you want confirmation, you could call the KM store yourself.

Some of you know Shroomer (Scott Williams) and Dusty (Richard Birss) and that they are doing a thru-hike of the AT this year. I hosted them near Roan Mtn in northeast TN last Friday/ Saturday and greatly enjoyed reuniting with Shroomer and meeting Dusty. Sadly, they both had to get off the trail within a few days, perhaps for the year. Dusty suffered a medical situation that required extraction by EMS near Kincora. He is still in the hospital following surgery but is progressing well. His wife arrived yesterday.

Shroomer had to leave due to a family medical situation back home. He's fine physically, not sick or injured. He is more likely to return this year than is Richard.

BTW, you can now refer to him as The Reverend Shroomer, since he will begin performing weddings next month. Is there anything that guy can't do?

I have tried to inform the list of their situations without violating too much personal info. Shroomer is on Postholer, so he will probably update soon.

Thanks for the update, Jim!

Scott is a good guy and one of those who helped us get a wounded thru hiker
flown off Kearsarge Pass 4 years ago!

 Hi,

I'm bored and picking nits here! If someone has carried hundreds of gallons of water to Third Gate, and you only carry 2 liters to Third Gate, and use the water that is cached there, how is that unsupported? Not having to carry two gallons of water from Scissors, or Rodriguez to Barrel Springs has increased the speed at which you've done that section, no?

If you take food from a trail angel, isn't that added calories that you didn't need to carry? Doesn't that improve your performance?

(In Catch-22 when Yossarian was complaining that the Germans were trying to kill him, Havermeyer pointed out that the Germans were trying to kill everybody. Yossarian's reply was "What difference does that make?")

What we need is an official governing body to decide these things! ;-)

YMMV, HYOH, etc

The bottom line: it doesn't matter what I think. Good luck to the speed hikers. It's an amazing achievement.

Gary

My opinion -- and that's all it is, an opinion -- is that if you come
across something on the trail which is there for ANYONE to use/drink/eat,
then use/drink/eat it and you're still unsupported. If you plan to have
someone meet you with stuff, then that is supported.

Good luck to all you record-seekers! I'm proud of all of you for just
attempting this!

I can't see them turn down hikers and since there is water just a few miles up the trail, I wouldn't worry about it too much. Just call them if you must know.
