Young men are told the same things, too, but I am certain it isn't nearly
as frequent.

People may be well meaning, but I think it is laziness and protection of
their own fears.

Instead of telling me that riding a motorcycle is dangerous, instead
encourage me to take safety courses and encourage others to drive safely
and look out for smaller vehicles sharing the road. It might help me to
actually be safer. Maybe ask me to take you for a ride on a quiet road,
encourage me to take it easy because you want to be able to enjoy the
scenery.

Don't tell me that hiking in wilderness is risky, encourage me to take
first aid courses or buy me an EPIRB. It might help me to handle an
emergency should one arise. Help me choose things that I will actually need
and not what you think I need that you are insecure about.

Instead of telling me you'll pray for me when I'm ill on Facebook, come
over and check on me, maybe bring me something to eat or make us some
coffee and visit a little while. It will make both of us feel better while
I'm not doing well. Your friendship probably means the world to me, and
your willingness to take time out of your busy life to visit when I'm
feeling down is a priceless gift that I will try to repay someday.

But I think most folks don't do this because they are lazy and would rather
place their insecurities on you, and/or they try to prevent their feeling
bad about what they **don't** do, diminsih their feelings of regret for
making some of the decisions they've made in their life. That's a damn
cryin shame.
