In the NP where I spend most of my volunteer time, Shenandoah, chain saws
aren't allowed to be used in the park's wilderness areas.

In National Park Service wilderness, chainsaws can be used, but not in
US Forest Service wilderness, unless there is a special dispensation
for use, like to fight a forest fire. I thought the distinction odd
when I switched over to the NPS from the USFS. I developed the
sanguine attitude after working for the USFS that they insisted on the
use of crosscut saws in the wilderness to somehow make up for their
lack of environmental protection shown in the management of timber
sales.
