While this is not by any means good news for the environment, is it not the
case that the snow drought in the Sierras changes the prospects for section
hikers throughout the state, and if it persists, for thru hikers too?

I hiked yesterday with "Shepherd" and "Can't Wait" from Highway 18 to Van
Dusen Canyon Road near Big Bear Lake (Miles 266-275). There were some
patches of packed snow in shaded areas, but the whole trail was very
passable. Not even any muddy areas. What is more, although the weather
prediction was that Big Bear Lake would not get out of the 40s,
temperaturewise, it was probably in the 50s for most of the hike.
