Shelly,

I've used the SanDisk Sansa Clip 8GB. It weighs in at .56oz but it does have an internal battery. The playing time is around 10 hours per specs but I typically get closer to 12. One of the features I like is that there is a Sleep mode that you can select and the device will turn itself off in 2 hours or less. The device has other features including an FM radio. Here is a link for the item on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-Sansa-Clip-Player-Black/dp/B005FVNH04/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1389664977&sr=8-2&keywords=sandisk+sansa+8gb

As for power, since you would not need spare batteries I recommend a Lipstick Power Bank (2600ma). It weighs in at less than 1 oz and comes with a compatible cable (USB to Mirco USB). If fact you may find this item could replace your solar device and come out with a net weight savings, although you may want to have 2 or 3 of these devices. So to keep all of this stuff charged get a small light weight 5v USB charger that plugs into a wall outlet. I like this one from HTC as it weighs in at less than 2 ozs. I am going to show my ignorance here but here goes. I am looking for a
small, very lightweight (of course) MP3'ish kind of device that I can take
with me on my upcoming PCT hike. I want to be able to listen to books and
music and the device needs to use removable batteries. Preferably one AAA
battery… or there a-bouts. Possibly a couple of ounces in weight? I am
hopelessly clueless about these things. I have an iPod but am trying to
avoid battery situations that require infield charging since I carry an
iPhone that takes up all the solar charging capacity I have in each day.
Thank you ever so much.
Shelly
