I am thinking Mammoth is the best option for timing as well.  If you don't
make it that far by the event date, it's an easy bus ride from Lone Pine,
Independence, or Bishop.  If you get to Mammoth early, you could continue to
Tuolumne where the Yosemite YARTS bus stops on its daily trip to Mammoth.  A
plane ticket from Mammoth leaves you lots of options...

The Mammoth airport is an option.  There is an evening flight out to LAX
everyday. If you run the numbers for buses plus time involved flying out of
Mammoth makes sense.
