We packed our bear canister, put a strip on priority mail tape across the top and mailed it to Kennedy Meadows. PO accepted it that way. A bonus is that when the PO weighs the canister you know exactly what weight you will be dropping in your pack.

We also marked every box mailed with distinctive tape so we could easily spot our box in the stacks at the PO. We used that same tape around out bear canister.

Hello- Planning a thru-hike this year and looking for bear canister input.
Due to requirements in certain sections, it seems the recommendation is to
begin using one in Kennedy Meadows and continue at least thru Sonora Pass.
Do you put your canister in a re-supply box to be picked up at/near Kennedy
Meadows? Do you start with it? It's extra weight, but peace of mind. (Was
anyone else on the high sierra loop summer of '12 during the hanta virus
scare? Bear canister aka mouse canister….kidding). Would love feedback.
Thanks, Cate.
