[pct-l] Bear Canisters

Be advised - as of 2011, the Desolation Wilderness (the PCT passes through this for many miles) on the west side of Lake Tahoe was seriously considering mandating bear canisters because the bears were getting habituated to people. The Tahoe Rim Trail Association already requires them on all their guided treks. If memory serves, it would be difficult to traverse the Desolation Wilderness in a single day.

You might want to check before you send you canister home.

You might consider having the bear canister all the way thru to Donner Summit. The bears are particularly active lately. Homeowners at Echo Lake, around Tahoe and even as far down as Reno are having bears in their trash. I saw bear evidence myself in these three places within the last 2 months. Remember the bear can is to discourage bears habituation to human food sources.
