Since you're just going to the Bay Area, you might find it much easier to
rent a car wherever you decide to exit the trail.

This will allow you more flexibility on where you exit the trail and timing
(so you don't have to purchase a flight weeks in advance and stick to a
strict schedule, or purchase a flight a few days in advance and spend an
arm and a leg).

Furthermore, once you get through security and ground transportation to and
from airports, I've found that flying in California often takes longer than
flying (a recent trip from SF to LA took 6 hours flying - ground transport,
security, car rental etc). Car rental might be cheaper depending on where
you pick it up.
