[pct-l] Post offices hold packages for only 15 days?

Yogi's right...regulations are one thing, but actual practice will vary
from PO to PO depending on the area. Also, many hikers will prepare their
boxes ahead of time, but have a friend or family member ship them out just
ahead of the time they'll be needed. Some have elaborate calendars set up
for this. Other prepared the boxes but leave them unsealed until just ready
to ship out in case any additional items need to be added, such as needed
first aid/hygiene supplies, letters, whatever comes up. They usually have
somebody at home organizing it all for them, though I've know of a couple
of guys who hired virtual assistants to handle it.
