DEET is volatile so it is ineffective after a few hours.  Permethrin
actually soaks into the fibers so it lasts for a few washings.  Commercially
applied permethrin is said to last up to 50 washings (but who really knows.)
I feel confident the self applied permethrin will last a lesser amount of
time, but still enough to be useful for a while. Besides - permethrin is
much more pleasant to work with and to be around.
