Hi Jane, a/k/a TOB

Just a note to let you know my 70 yr old life partner Sally Howe and I Rick Hubbard a/k/a “newsman” (age 72) plan to be hiking from Tuolumne Meadows down to and past Mt Whitney beginning Wed. July 23rd. We’re planning 3 weeks (including stops) for that stretch of the trail.

Looks like we’ll be starting a full week behind you and thus unlikely to meet up, unless it’s nearing Mt. Whitney, but nevertheless we’ll try to ask/check to see how you’re doing..

Cheers!

Rick

I plan to be on the trail from July 14 through Aug. 3. On this section I'll be quite slow, but steady - about 8-9 miles a day (approx. 1 MPH). I section-hiked the PCT from 1996 through 2006 and miss it terribly! Although I hiked the Camino (and loved it) in 2012/13, it's definitely not the same. Two much younger friends from Albuquerque will meet me at Kearsarge Pass for the final stretch. Unfortunately, they're still working and can't do the whole thing. Any takers?

I thought at any minute I was going to be sitting beneath a sheared and shattered shelter - ha! Two days before I was post holing for several miles going south towards KM. Just a part of the pct experience. I don't see any snow in the forecast, so the hikers getting north of KM now shouldn't have too much problems with snow on the trail except for patches. But the nights can get quite cold, and the weather in the Sierras can change in a heartbeat. I doubt if they need any katoolahs or ice axes up to the portal. At that point my info is sketchy.

> Well, I can't say I'm even close to being in such august company. But I just exited the trail for a bit of family stuff and plan on returning soon. Several says ago I hiked in from near the portal to Kennedy Meadows. I passed about 2 dozen thru hikers headed north - the vanguard of this years' class.

> Anyway, I stopped at the 1st Kern River Bridge - coming from the north- to pick up some water. While there I took the opportunity of washing my feet and socks. I first chased a few cows away by lightly prodding them with my hiking poles. When I finished by feet bath, I carefully dried and powered them. I carefully put on one sock and shoe. I managed to get the other sock on and stood up to put on the remaining shoe. I lost my balance and to avoid falling into the damn river I stepped back with my stocking foot... right into a fresh, fragrant, juicy cow patty! Oh, the trials and tribulations of the trail!
