[pct-l] Paying Bills While Thru-hiking

One thought that comes to mind is to get a credit card that you will use 
only for your thru-hike or other travels.  And another one for your 
automatic charges.  If you never take the second one out of the house, the 
odds of it ever getting stolen or lost are greatly reduced.

Along the same line, you also need to have a plan about what to do when
your credit card gets stolen or "swiped", and your bank cancels the credit
card.  (Mine did, somewhere between Belden and Crater Lake.)  You have to
figure out how to convince the bank to send you a replacement credit card
on the trail (unlikely), or else have your home support team know what to
do to forward the credit card to you on the trail.  You'll want to have
your home team be authorized to speak on your behalf to the bank as well.

Finally, you'll need to know in advance all of your service providers that
are on auto pay against your old defunct credit card.  Otherwise, you'll
find that recurring services at home will stop when you are gone, such as
your ISP, netflix, amazon, newspapers and many more things you've surely
forgotten about.  Review the last 12 months of your credit card bills
looking for auto-pay events,  and then make a list so that you or your home
team can wade through the service providers to give them your new credit
card number.
