[pct-l] Map and Compass

I remember  hiking a section of the PCT from I-5 in Northern
California near Castle Crags (the "trail" was on a road from I-5 at
that time) to Seiad Valley in 1976--the Winnett guidebook would have
statements like, " Look up on the ridge to the West and head for an
obvious lodgepole pine". I had to research what a lodgepole pine
looked like. But when I got there, there it was and I headed for it. I
really am thankful for developing map reading skills from 7 1/2 minute
paper topos from the USGS which I used predominantly in the 70's-90's.
I couldn't imagine using a GPS now (which I do consistently) without
the map reading skills developed in those less tech heavy days.

I also wish I had saved some of the first PCT  Wilderness Press
guidebooks--they would probably be a hoot to read over now.
