I always find it humorous when people talk about not needing a paper map or
compass to hike the PCT, and then in the next moment tell how if failed for
awhile and a person carrying a paper map and compass helped them find the
route. The reality is the only reason they didn't need anything but a GPS
was because they were near other hikers who were carrying the
non-electronic tools.
