Try your nearest "health" food store for erythritol. I live in a small town, and ours has it, at least in granulated form. The powdered version I still have to order online.

I know it's cheaper to make your own than to buy the prepackaged stuff. I'm 
diabetic, so I can't have all the carbs in the forms of rice and pasta and 
potatoes, but I can use brown rice, brown pasta and whole wheat flours. I 
have found that if I precook the rice or pasta, then I can dehydrate it and 
it will reconstitute very quickly. I also can't have the sugars, so I can 
substitute my own sweeteners...I've used Splenda, powdered honey (which 
doesn't seem to run up my blood sugar) and a new product that I have to 
order on line called Erythritol. Puritan's Pride has that for the best 
price. I love the asian stores for all the indian, chinese, thai foods.
