I agree with Stephen that while hiking vigorously you want your feet being
able to breathe.

That being said, a vapor barrier liner (VBL) can be really helpful if you
want to keep your feet warm at a lower activity level in cold weather, say
when you are done for the day or have to stop for a longer time. Your socks
have the best insulation when they are dry, but they can (and will) get wet
from the inside (as your feet are sweating) and from the outside (from your
wet shoes). Using liners (plastic bags) can help if you also have a spare
pair of dry socks for this case.

I have used this layer system in snowy conditions:
1) thin liner sock (this is optional, feels better, less clammy)
2) plastic bag (this traps the moisture from your body)
3) dry wool sock (this will be your main insulation for cold)
4) plastic bag (to keep your socks from getting wet from the outside)
5) shoe
