This article- on the PCTA website- describes conditions for a new
permitting system, conditions that seem largely inconsistent with the idea
of gathering hundreds of hikers in one place.

It started as a great idea and has done a lot of good for a lot of people
over the years, introducing some to the trail, and reuniting veterans of
it.

But those simpler times are gone, and there are just too many people on the
trail now for a gathering of this type to continue to be a good idea.
