[pct-l] Interesting article on water treatment

Saying your "sick" is very subjective. What kind of sickness? Chronic diarrhea? One time diarrhea? Sick stomach? Gas? Vomiting?

What was the source, what was the infection? Sick from a fly landing on your food? Sick from water born contamination? Sick from improper hand washing? A virus?

Not a very good study in my opinion.

The only way to do a study like this that would be more conclusive would be to have control groups and to possibly make epidemiology tests on stool samples of the participants when they get sick. I think the main idea here is to eliminate the nasty bugs like giardia and less so for mild or transitory gastrointestinal illness and this study does not differentiate that.

What might be interesting would be to take and test water samples from back flushing water filters. If one was to keep track of the amount of water filtered wouldn't this be one way to indicate what's in the water over the long haul?

Commonly recognized foodborne infections are:

    Campylobacteriosis (Campylobacter)

    Cryptosporidiosis (Cryptosporidium)

    Escherichia coli O157:H7 Infection (E. coli O157)
    and Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS)

    Giardiasis (Giardia)

    Listeriosis (Listeria monocytogenes)

Norovirus Infection (aka Norwalk virus, calicivirus, viral gastroenteritis)

    Salmonellosis (Salmonella)

    Scombroid Fish Poisoning

    Shigellosis (Shigella)

    Toxoplasmosis (Toxoplasma gondii)

    Vibrio Infection (Vibrio parahaemolyticus)

    Yersiniosis (Yersinia species)

There was no significant difference between groups [that treated or did not treat their water] in the number of people who said they experienced sickness due to trail water.
