In past years I have often been out at Barrel Springs on a Saturday late afternoon and have seen only one or two hikers. Last night I decided to swing by after I left Mataguay Scout Camp. There was a full moon, so it was easy for people to see. I got there about 8:15 PM and found a dozen or so people in the process of bedding down. The small frogs in the horse trough we singing loudly. The water was flowing at a trickle rate into a plastic jug that was hung on the pipe outlet. The tough was holding water nicely. In the past few years the trough has never been as full.
As I talked to a number of through hikers more arrived. Possibly another dozen. Most had left Lake Morena on Saturday or Sunday the week before. But some had left the boarder on Wednesday of this week. One couple came in, filtered some water, and pushed on to knock off a few more miles of cool moonlit hiking. I have never seen Barrel Springs as crowded.
