Double Tap had a great overview posted at doubletaphikes.com but it appears that it's currently pointing to a default landing page.

There's always Yogi's book. I can't recommend it for actual planning due to issues of subjectivity and completeness, but it serves as a decent overview.

Many people had success with guthook's app; I only used it for one section. Barebones town details are also included with Halfmile's maps/app.

Once the season starts, you'll want to follow various PCT groups on Facebook for the most up-to-date town information. For example, Facebook will tell you that you could sleep free at the Lutheran church in Chester in 2015.

The PCTA links to various resources to get you started. For your specific questions on transportation, see http://www.pcta.org/discover-the-trail/backcountry-basics/pct-transportation/

My brother hiked with me from the southern terminus to Mt. Laguna. Beyond transportation, it was a great way to start the trail.
