John,
In my book "BASE WEIGHT" is everything but food & water.
I carried as much as 85 lb hiking with the scouts and as little as 9.5 lb
"base weight"...22 lb with food and water on my JMT SPEED HIKES.
It all depends on your physical fitness, what your comfort level is and
what you want out of your hike.
If you want maximum comfort the weight goes up.
If you are willing to sacrifice comfort for speed, the weight goes down.
you have to decide what is more important in then pack accordingly

Hey John, usually we talk about a "base weight" in comparing pack weights.
That is everything except food, water and fuel. So, what is your base
weight?
