Hey Yellowstone,

In the drought years people were entering the High Sierra as early as mid
May and doing just fine. When you and I hiked in 2010, it was deep snow
for much of the trail from Cottonwood all the way to Canada as late as late
June. That year, I had to get off trail for several weeks in May and
toward the end of the month I drove to several of the northern passes, and
from Stevens south, found deep snow everywhere I went. I was hoping on
something other than the High Sierra for a return point on the trail, and
couldn't find it. I just slogged through the stuff for 4+ weeks with
Mango, Plain Slice, Little Engine and Smiles, which was wonderful, if hard
as hell! Many people we know jumped north to Shasta and attempted to hike
south, but were turned around by the impassible trail after several days of
snow and blowdowns. So much simply depends on the winter weather, which
hasn't happened yet.

If you've got an open schedule, and want pleasant hiking, I'd shoot for
late June, early July as a usual time for basically clear sailing and I'd
start from Tuolumne Meadows as the blow downs in a typical year are not as
bad north of Tuolumne, and can be awful in the Southern Cascades. It'll
give the trail crews time to clear those northern trails before you get
there.

How exciting that you're finishing the trail! Let me know when you get to
the Tahoe Region just in case I'm around. I'm hoping for the GDT this
summer, but if I'm in town, I'd love to catch up.
