All we did this year was a 40 mile section from Horseshoe Meadows to Olancha Pass, SOBO. I needed to fill in the short gap between that saddle where most folks leave the PCT to climb Olancha Peak and Death Canyon. Three friends joined me. We did it in August, expecting to have this all to ourselves. On the contrary, we ran into a lot of thruhikers headed SOBO to Kennedy Meadows, having skipped the Sierra earlier. We must have seen at least a dozen. Plus one cowboy nursing a sick cow at Diaz Meadow. No problems with water. It did get hot after getting over Olancha Pass, though. The southern southern Sierra is my favorite hiking and backpacking spot, it's just beautiful. In June I hiked from Tehachapi to where the trail crosses Kelso Valley road. Then in July I hiked from Cook & Green Pass (north of Seiad Valley) to Ashland Ski area just before the trail crossed Interstate 5 in southern Oregon. That was my 3rd time trying to hike that section. Several years ago I was forced off the trail at Cook & Green Pass because of a fire and then planned on making up that section two years later but was again turned back by another fire. By the way, for those of you that like to go to micro-breweries, Caldera in Ashland, Oregon is a great one. Great beer and food. Then in August I hiked from McKenzie Pass to Timberline Lodge. That now makes a continuous hike, over many years, from the Mexican border to Timberline Lodge, 2,100 miles. I would have gone all the way to Cascade Locks, but I am hoping that the Eagle Creek trail will reopen before my hiking days are over, so I am saving that little section. In 2020 I will start hiking Washington. On all three of these hikes the trail was crowded. Hiking on the trail in Oregon in August you are in the middle of both the northbound and southbound herds. I am hoping that in 2020 in Washington I will be ahead of the herd. On another note, I am one of the crew leaders for the PCTA's Cajon Pass Chapter of trail maintainers (affectionately known as the trail gorillas). We are always looking for volunteers. Our next project will be on Saturday, January 18th. If you're NOBO, you'll be well ahead of the bulk of the herd if you hit Cascade Locks mid to late July and finish by later in August or very early in September.? Note that August into early September is prime section hiking time in Washington and popular sections like Snoqualmie Pass to Stevens Pass (I-90 to US2) are quite busy. If you want to come up to Washington to work on the trail, I have it on good authority from one of the founders of the PCTA's North 350 Blades chapter that there will be a multiple week long crews on Glacier Peak this coming summer.? 1 or 2 will be full on horse pack supported (possibly in the July time frame) while a couple will be mostly self supported backpack trips (early to mid August time frame).? The latter 2 will head in on the south side of Glacier Peak and start tackling the decade plus backlog of brush.? I get a daily summary of emails to the list server. Say there might be 5 emails on different topics. If I want to respond to one I should delete the others and then reply to the one of interest. If you look at the last several days people would respond to the email from the list server without deleting earlier non-related emails. So if you start with 5 emails on different topics and 2 people respond without deleting the original thread the next day you would have 12 messages. Done properly you would have two messages that also would each contain the original message of the? 2 people. Granted It's early days and people are still responding to Brick's 'test' message, but as to topics covered grow we need to be judicious in the number additional messages we include in our responses. I typically hike for three-weeks per year. ?This past year I left off in June in Agua Dulce. ?That California summer sun really gives my pale New England skin a beating, so I was happy to stop there on a 100 degree day. ?I thought I might head out after Christmas to do the one section I could reasonably knock off in the winter, Aqua Dulce to Tehachapi. ?Would also like to push on to do Section F to Walker Pass, although it looks doubtful I will have enough time. So my questions are: Looks like temps can get to just below freezing this time of year, so I am thinking my 20 degree bag would be adequate? I do not expect more than a few inches of snow at the higher elevations on these sections, but please tell me if I am wrong. Looks like my biggest problem will be water and unmaintained caches this time of year, but in the cooler temperatures I expect to be using less water.? Does anyone know the status of Hikertown in January? Looks like I missed my chance to stay at Casa-de-Luna. ?:( Still trying to figure out how to get from Tehachapi to a major airport. ?If I hike to Walker Pass, I think the bus that passes through there runs year round? As you can see, I am still in the planning stages. ?Thank you for any advice you can offer. Just in case I do do section F, Marmot, given your previous experience do you recommend I bring micro spikes for that section? And thank you David for the reminder about rain. ?Since I have only hiked southern California in May & June, it was easy for me to believe that the song was true, 'it never rains in California.' I arrived in Agua Dulce this afternoon. ?It was cold and rainy there, but the reports are that there might be 1-2 feet of snow at the higher elevations along section E. ?I did not arrive prepared to slog thru that. ?I have retreated to Santa Clarita to consider my options. ?Had a hard time getting a room too since many of the mountain passes have been shut down during the storm, lots of travelers are here waiting for them to open up again. Does not look like this will melt off anytime soon. ?I might have to go to Plan B, rent a car, explore small desert towns, and visit my daughter in Vegas. ?I will decide how adventuresome I feel tomorrow, but Section E might have to wait until the next time I can get out here in June.
