I have always used light to mid-weight hiking boots with metal arches for
the strong support. Some time ago I developed a problem with my
transverse arches and need orthotics. I have to be careful to find boots
that will accommodate this. The boots that I like are made by
Montrail. I have thought about possibly changing to trail running shoes,
but never have tried them for back-packing. Until recently I used them
for trail running and they have pretty good support, high ankle coverage
compared to other running shoes, solid toes to shield from stones and toe
stubs, and high traction gripping soles. You might think about trying
something like that. <br><br>
