<P>August is prime JMT season, and it's amazing how many hikers will be out there, generally completing the JMT atop Whitney. You will need a permit for the forest areas you'll be hiking through. Here's what the USFS site says:</P>
<P><SPAN class=style1><STRONG><FONT color=#ff0000>New!</FONT></STRONG></SPAN> Everybody throughout the <A href="http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/inyo/recreation/wild/zonelarge.shtml">Mt. Whitney Zone</A> must possess a valid wilderness permit year-round. Permits are issued only at the InterAgency Visitor Center, 1 mile south of Lone Pine, CA.<BR>From May 1 to November 1, all use is regulated by limited entry <A href="http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/inyo/recreation/wild/quotas.shtml">quotas</A>. Permits for the quota period may be reserved in advance. Most permits for Mt. Whitney are reserved during the <A href="http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/inyo/recreation/wild/whitneylottery.shtml">Mt. Whitney Lottery</A>, in February. <P>IMHO, definitely check ahead and not leave your permits to chance.</P>
