Hi Chris,

1) shoes big enough for your feet to expand. Some hikers go with shoes
2 sizes bigger than street size; others find one size larger works.
Pay particular attention to the toe box. it should feel a bit roomy,
both in width and length.
2) I like using a pair of liner socks underneath a pair of wool, like
Smartwool. Some hikers go with just one pair. The theory behind the
liners is that some of the slipping that occurs will be sock to sock
instead of sock to foot which is what causes blisters. If you go with
two pair, you'll need to buy your shoes big enough to accommodate the
socks that you wear.
3) For my liners (or main sock if not using liners), I use Injinji's.
completely eliminates blisters on the toes. You can get them at REI
and other outdoor supply stores, but here's their company website:
Good luck with the planning, and enjoy your hike!!
