First hike: in high school Girls' Athletic Association circa 1962. An afterschool hike on the southern Illinois levee overlooking the Mississippi River. We stopped, built a fire, and made banana boats for a snack. (Peel one strip back on a banana. Scoop out some of the banana with a spoon and eat what you scooped out. Fill hole with pieces of Hershey bar and little marshmallows. Put banana peel back over the banana. Wrap banana with aluminum foil and place in coals. Retrieve, open and eat with a spoon. Have handiwipes or wet bandana ready for the clean up.)

First night in a tent: horseback pack trip in Wyoming rockies circa 1974. Husband at the time was so afraid of the passing moose, deer, and elk that he left the flashlight on all night long. About 4:00 a.m. I drug my sleeping bag out of the overlit tent and slept under the stars.

First backpacking trip: circa 1979 in the Ocala National Forest in Florida--I got heat exhaustion and my kidneys shut down for 24 hours; have learned a lot since then!

Yup, I'm a geezer.

Subject: [at-l] Pack weights of yesteryear

-------------------------------

How many of those who hiked 30 years ago are still doing so?
How many of those who hiked 15 years ago are still doing so?
I'm proud to answer "yes" to both.

Oh man, you HAD to ask that question. Yes, I think my first real
overnight hike was in Scouts... 30 years ago!
Does this officially welcome me to geezerhood?
