Plain old Wingdings with a shift+J gives a nice J or if you are having a bad day then shift + L returns L

  How do you make a check mark on the computer?  The closest I could find was a square root symbol, and I couldn't figure out the instructions for doing that: U+221A.  Low tech here.  And while I have your attention, Merry Christmas, fellow hikers.  May your paths be soft and your packs light.
