Just back from Crawford Notch, here are the hikers seen on Sept. 1 and Sept 2.
The pack is still moving through the area although this group thinks they are
more toward the back of the pack, not the middle. They're still moving through
at about 10 per day, same as last week. Only one southbounder was seen and I'm
sorry I didn't get his name. (he declined the offer of snack/soda...)

from 1998 - a real surprise for both of us!

I had the pleasure of meeting Bill King early this morning, while he was walking
his dog (a 1-year-old Doberman) near the Willey Station House. All that remains
there is the foundation of the station master's house. This gentleman is in his
late 70's to early 80's and lives in Harts Location. Very fit, he walks several
miles each day in the mountains... He lived as a boy in the Willey Station
House, his grandfather was the station master at the time, probably around 1940.
He had loads of memories of the place, remembered the Crawford Hotel now long
gone, replaced by the AMC Highland Center. It was a real treat to talk with this
man, he has such clear memories of the Whites before many of us were around to
visit the area. He was one of 3 bidders trying to buy the old hotel in the notch
when it came up for sale in the 1970's. He bid $165 K and it sold for $175 K.
The price was for the old-style grand hotel, 13 acres of land including tennis
courts, stables, etc. Sounds cheap even in 1975 dollars.

Eventually the land was sold to an AMTRAK executive who then donated the land to
the AMC with a stipulation that he control a small portion of land where he has
a cabin. Now I've gotta go looking for that cabin near the Highland Center...
