[at-l] Fun in Florida

For any of you considering an FT thru hike, PLEASE remember that it does get COLD here. And don't assume that the cold starts comewhere around central Florida. FT had its first hiker death this year, in south Florida, and from hypothermia. Temps were below freezing at night.

If you do the entire FT in our normal hiking season (about November through March), you can expect temps anywhere from the high 80s to the teens over the course of your hike. And assume that those teens (especially with windchill) could be in south Florida.

Joan

I've only "hoofed it" on a relatively small percentage of the 1500 (or so) miles of the Florida Trail, in the Everglades, the "Big O" (for Okeechobee) and the Orlando area...which is where my sister lives.

Regarding how much walking in water is required, a picture is worth a thousand words:

I've always REALLY liked that one of you at the Key West marker. How much of the FT have you hiked? That is definitely on my to-do list. A January start was what I thought, with preparations for occasional dips to 20.

The big question: In "normal" times, how much are you walking in water? How about on roads?

I should probably join FT-L, I guess.

Wench, haven't you done the FT?

Or a couple of "those" days. We went canoeing for several miles on the other.

One o' these years; I do go to Florida every so often:

(I've got more recent ones, but it won't let me post 'em...)

As I recall it was one of those days when I was chained to my desk until about 8:00 p.m.

I know that dude (your sweetie)...we were working on that trail when I was down there in November.

Sorry I didn't get to meet you, though...

If you ever wondered about trail work in Florida, you can check out the latest F Troop efforts at the link below. F Troop is a volunteer vacation, usually 3-5 days long. Florida Trail Association usually sponsors several during the winter. Volunteers get their meals and a place to camp, usually with showers (in our area).

I'm right proud that the photos include my sweetie, Jon Phipps (tan long pants, navy check shirt, white beard), and my son, Greg Norris (tan shorts and black tee with yellow design). I'm not in the photos as I spent the day cleaning, setting up tables and chairs, making appetizers, setting up a buffet line, filling coolers with beverages, etc. Our FTA chapter traditionally sponsors a lasagna dinner for any F Troop crew working in our area. I've hosted the dinner since we started having F Troops in our area; my house has always been the closest to the work sites. Other members bring lasagna, bags of salad, brownies & bars, and garlic bread. (And best of all, some great gals always end up being kitchen angels at clean up time.)

You'all come sometime!
